Professors Nicolas Brunet and Sheri Longboat from the University of Guelph recently published their edited volume entitled Local Communities and the Mining Industry: Economic Potential and Social and Environmental Responsibilities with a foreword by Hans Matthews, President of the Canadian Aboriginal Minerals Association. The book explores the often complex and multi-faceted relationships between the mining sector and “host” communities, where target minerals are located. Each chapter was led by a top scholar or practitioner in the field, drawing upon experiences throughout the globe. This book is especially relevant as the push for green minerals, necessary for a decarbonised economy, embolden governments and corporations to remove barriers to development on lands considered to be under Indigenous jurisdiction through a variety of mechanisms. This research was funded by a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Insight Grant (2018-2023).
